The Journey Behind Apna Ghar Ashram
Apna Ghar Ashram was founded by Dr. K. Niranjan, a dedicated ophthalmologist, and his wife, Dr. Katyayani, a dentist, in Varanasi. Deeply moved by the suffering of abandoned and helpless individuals along the holy banks of the Ganga, the couple established the Humanity Development Research Institute Trust and, on 14 October 2018, laid the foundation of the Ashram on a 25,000 sq. ft. parcel of land. Their vision was simple yet powerful: to serve humanity as a form of worship.
Apna Ghar Ashram is not merely a shelter—it is a sanctuary for those cast aside in the final stages of life, found in pain on roadsides, railway stations, and public places, suffering silently without food, medical care, or even clean water. Many arrive with untreated wounds, serious illnesses, and emotional scars. Some are so neglected that their injuries are infested with maggots, and their conditions too painful for most to even witness. For them, Apna Ghar is a place of dignity, healing, and hope.
Here, residents—whom we lovingly call Prabhujis—are welcomed as family. They are given free access to shelter, nutritious meals, medical care, clean clothing, and above all, unconditional love and attention. Each individual receives not just support but respect, regardless of their background or condition.
The Varanasi Ashram is part of a larger Apna Ghar network, with its roots in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. The first Ashram was established in the village of Bajhera on June 29, 2000. Today, the Bharatpur branch is the largest in the country in its category, providing care to over 2,500 residents, including more than 1,500 women. Across 25 branches nationwide, more than 5,000 individuals have found safety, care, and a renewed sense of life through Apna Ghar.
In line with its ethos of compassion for all living beings, the Ashram also runs Jeev Seva Sadan, a sanctuary for injured, abandoned, or ill animals and birds. Currently, over 250 animals—dogs, cows, monkeys, peacocks, and even Nilgai—are receiving medical care, shelter, and kindness under this initiative.
Apna Ghar Ashram continues to be a living testament to the belief that seva—selfless service—is the highest form of human expression, and that every life, no matter how forsaken, deserves to be treated with care, dignity, and love.
अपना घर आश्रम की स्थापना डॉ. के. निरंजन, एक समर्पित नेत्र रोग विशेषज्ञ, और उनकी पत्नी डॉ. कात्यायनी, एक दंत चिकित्सक, द्वारा एक गहरे उद्देश्य और करुणा की भावना के साथ वाराणसी में की गई थी। मां गंगा के पावन तटों पर परित्यक्त और असहाय लोगों की पीड़ा से व्यथित होकर, इस दंपति ने ह्यूमैनिटी डेवलपमेंट रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट ट्रस्ट की स्थापना की और 14 अक्टूबर 2018 को 25,000 वर्ग फुट भूमि पर आश्रम की नींव रखी। उनका उद्देश्य सीधा था लेकिन अत्यंत प्रभावशाली: सेवा को ही सच्ची पूजा मानना।
अपना घर आश्रम केवल एक शरणस्थली नहीं है—यह जीवन के अंतिम चरण में छोड़े गए उन लोगों के लिए एक आश्रय है जो सड़कों, रेलवे स्टेशनों और सार्वजनिक स्थानों पर पीड़ा में पाए जाते हैं, बिना भोजन, दवा या साफ पानी के चुपचाप कष्ट झेलते हैं। कई लोग गंभीर बीमारियों और असहनीय घावों के साथ यहां आते हैं—कुछ की चोटों में कीड़े पड़ चुके होते हैं, और उनकी दशा इतनी भयावह होती है कि आम व्यक्ति देख भी नहीं सकता। ऐसे असहाय और अज्ञात पीड़ितों को अपना घर आश्रम परिवार अपनाता है और उन्हें गरिमा, उपचार और आशा प्रदान करता है।
यहाँ निवासियों को—जिन्हें हम स्नेहपूर्वक प्रभुजी कहते हैं—मुफ़्त आश्रय, पौष्टिक भोजन, चिकित्सा सुविधा, स्वच्छ वस्त्र और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण, बिना शर्त प्रेम और देखभाल दी जाती है। हर व्यक्ति को बिना किसी भेदभाव के सम्मानपूर्वक जीवन जीने का अवसर दिया जाता है।
वाराणसी आश्रम, अपना घर की उस व्यापक श्रृंखला का हिस्सा है जिसकी जड़ें भरतपुर, राजस्थान में हैं। पहला आश्रम 29 जून 2000 को भरतपुर ज़िले से 8 किलोमीटर दूर बाजहेड़ा गांव में स्थापित किया गया था। आज भरतपुर शाखा अपने वर्ग में देश का सबसे बड़ा आश्रम है, जहाँ 2500 से अधिक प्रभुजी निवास करते हैं, जिनमें 1500 से अधिक महिलाएँ हैं। देशभर में फैले 25 आश्रमों में अब तक 5000 से अधिक आश्रयविहीनों को सेवा, सुरक्षा और नया जीवन प्रदान किया गया है।
इसी सेवा भावना को आगे बढ़ाते हुए आश्रम में जीव सेवा सदन भी संचालित किया जा रहा है, जहाँ घायल, बीमार और परित्यक्त जानवरों—जैसे कुत्ते, गाय, मोर, बंदर, नीलगाय आदि—की देखभाल की जाती है। वर्तमान में 250 से अधिक घायल और बीमार पशु यहां उपचार, सेवा और आश्रय प्राप्त कर रहे हैं।
अपना घर आश्रम इस विश्वास का जीवंत उदाहरण है कि निस्वार्थ सेवा ही मानवता की सबसे उच्चतम अभिव्यक्ति है, और हर जीवन, चाहे वह कितना ही उपेक्षित क्यों न हो, देखभाल, सम्मान और प्रेम पाने का अधिकारी है।

प्रेरणा
अपनाघर आश्रम वाराणसी की तरफ से हम उन ठाकुर स्वरूप जनों के प्रति कृतज्ञ हैं जिन्होंने इस परिकल्पना को सरकार करने में अपना असीम योगदान का संकल्प लिया ।
समाज सेवा शब्द से एक डॉक्टर होने के कारण हम अछूत नही थे। मरीजों की लंबी कतारों में कुछ एक लोग निकल जाते थे जिनके पास कोई नहीं , इलाज के लिए पैसे नहीं। ऐसे प्रभुस्वरूप मरीजों से प्रेरणा लेकर हमनें इस बीड़े को उठाने का प्रण किया ।
अक्सर हमें ये बात महसूस होती थी कि पैसे तो सब कमाते हैं। जिन्दगी सबकी बीत जाती है, लेकिन व्यवसाय से हटकर निःस्वार्थ मन से किसी दूसरे के लिए थोड़ा भी अगर हम कुछ कर सकते हैं तो यह पूंजी भौतिक पूंजी से कई गुणा स्थाई होती है।
इसी क्रम मे मेरी अर्धांगिनी डा. कात्यायनी जो पेशे से एक दंत सर्जन है, के सहयोग से हमने समाज की सुविधाओं से वंचित लोगों हेतु अपना तन मन धन लगाने का निश्चय किया। जैसे – जैसे सोच स्थापित होती गई, भौतिक चीजें खुद-ब-खुद अपनी जरूरत के अनुसार मिलती गई। इसी क्रम में गंगा जी के किनारे अपनी 25000 स्क्वायर फिट जमीन पर बिल्डिंग को हमने असहाय लावारिस लोगों की सेवा में लगाने का संकल्प किया ।
इस प्रकिया में अतुल मेहरा, श्रीमती रिचा मेहरा, श्री राकेश सिंह जी एवं श्री अरविंद अग्रवाल जी का सहयोग एवं प्रेरणा दीपक में घी का काम कर गया। पूर्वाचल के इस पवित्रकाशी नगरी में अनाथ बेसहारा लोगों के लिए ठिकाना “अपना घर आश्रम ” की स्थापना में डाॅ. बी. एम. भारद्वाज, डाॅ . माधुरी भारद्वाज एवं अपनाघर भरतपुर की पूरी टीम की लगन एवं निःस्वार्थ भाव से प्रभु सेवा को देखकर हम सभी लोग इतने कृतज्ञ हैं कि जिनका शब्दो मे वर्णन नही किया जा सकता ।
